THE INTERNAL - NEWSLETTER 21/04

Hello, hope everybody is fine & working hard J !!! This is my last week working for WoX here in Auckland, but Sedina is coming soon to take over my position at the WoX office. I will leave the 25th of July and until then I will still be available – just give me call if there is anything I can help you with. Have a splendid week & see you soon!

WEEKEND SUGGESTIONS

Tiritiri Matangi Wildlife Bird Sanctuary is a conservation success story and a wonderful day trip. The island has been cleared of predators and planted with more than three million native trees. It’s home to many endangered birds, including kiwi and the extremely rare takahe. You can choose to explore at your leisure, but the Park Ranger Tours that are offered to all visitors are well worth the extra few dollars.

Fullers operate a day trip to the island on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Ferries depart from downtown Auckland at 9am and arrive back at 4.45pm and from Gulf Harbour at 9.45am, returning at 3.45pm.

Bookings are essential. For further information or to book your ferry ticket phone Fullers on (09) 367 9111 or visit www.fullers.co.nz

For more info check out: http://www.123.co.nz/tiri/default.htm

Great Barrier Island -It is important to remember that this is an isolated Island in the Hauraki Gulf which is 90km from the nearest city, Auckland. Weather conditions can change suddenly and as a result arrangements can also change suddenly with cancellations and delays. It is important to be flexible when going on a holiday to Great Barrier Island. Step into that 'laid-back' feeling and 'go with the flow' and know that your holiday will be much better if you can let go of any expectations to get anywhere on time. On the whole the services to the Island are excellent with very few delays. It is only in extreme conditions that the boats and planes don't go and it is only because of their concern for your safety. Enjoy the experience of going to an out of the way Island!

What you can do there? Well, experiencing untouched wilderness, walking trails, nature, beaches, fishing, mountain biking, kayaking and diving. A glimpse of what all of New Zealand must once have been like.

For infos on how to get there, check out www.subritzky.co.nz, the company is offering special prices at the moment: $55 for students, return ticket.

Accommodation: http://www.greatbarrier.co.nz/GBIVIC/backpack.htm

This truly is a nice opportunity to get out of the city for a weekend, without needing a car and still staying quite close to Auckland! Give it a try!

AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

July 9 - 25

Founded in 1970 as a component of the Auckland Festival, the Auckland International Film Festival in time became a fund-raising event subsidising live arts. Rescued from this role by the intervention of the Federation of Film Societies in 1984, the 30th Festival in 1998 achieved an audience of 86,500. The year 2000 marked the Festival’s return to the fabulously refurbished Civic Theatre, the South Pacific’s most insanely beautiful picture palace.

Lots and lots of really interesting movies, like:

In My Father’s Den (NZ/UK)

Fahrenheit 9/11 (USA)

Hero (China)

Kamchatka (Argentina/Spain)

Free Radicals (Austria/Germany/Switzerland) ….

GOMEZ – splitting the difference

July 10, The Studio, Auckland

Good noise? Perhaps great noise, amazing noise, psychedelic noise, soulful noise, chaotic noise, beautiful noise....

The tour will support the release of Gomez’s fourth album "Split The Difference", an album packed with straightforward – or at least relatively straightforward – rock songs. Adding to their already expansive live repertoire; which includes the brilliant and occasionally obtuse experimentation that came with past albums Liquid Skin, Bring It On, Abandoned Shopping Trolley, and In Our Gun, these shows will most certainly be an experience not to be missed.

THE BAR AT BUENA VISTA

July 13, 8pm, ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre

The supergroups of Cuba will be touring New Zealand in July with the best Cuba has to offer in music and dance in The Bar at Buena Vista.

Featuring original members of the Buena Vista Social Club, Afro-Cuban All Stars and Vieja Trova Santiagera, this will be a once only New Zealand Tour.

The Bar at Buena Vista - pays homage to the Buena Vista neighbourhood and the stars of the Buena Vista Social Club via the music of legends such as the late Compay Segundo and Ruben Gonzalez. It is a dedication to the original spirit of the music of Cuba, the lifeblood of a people whose heritage is as rich as it is old. A cast of Cuba's most notable and legendary musical greats, drawn from renowned groups like the Grammy-winning Buena Vista Social Club and Irakere, Afro-Cuban All Stars, Vieja Trova Santiagera and Anakoana inject the music with life and wisdom in a performance of a lifetime in Cuba.

SOLA ROSA

GOLDENHORSE with the Auckland Philharmonia

Sat 31 July, 8pm, Aotea Centre

With sales of their debut album “Riverhead” going double platinum, Goldenhorse is the shooting star on the NZ Music scene. The five piece band’s soundscapes wind through swing, funk, calypso, waltz, ska and all-out rock. Add to the mix some stop/start rhythms and awesome three-part harmonies, and all of a sudden it isn’t so easy to compare Goldenhorse to anyone else.
